A Love That Surpasses Knowledge
I read a book several years ago called, "God is my Co-Pilot". It's about a man named Robert L. Scott. It was the story of his life, how he as a young man became a pilot and eventually went on to lead the United States' effort in China as commander of the Flying Tigers fighter squadron.
One story made a big impression on me, and I wanted to relate it to you today. You see, when Robert Scott went to the Army Air Corps it was the first time he had been away from the girl he loved the most. He was stationed far from home for training, and far from his girlfriend and soon to be wife.
Remember, this is before the age of the email, cell phones, or cheap long distance calling. In the 1930's many places didn't have long distance calling at all. But not wanting to lose touch with the one he loved, Robert made a tremendous sacrifice.
You see, each Friday at 5 pm Robert got off on leave from base. Each and every weekend he would drive 20 hours home to see his girlfriend, and then turn around and drive 20 hours back before he had to be back on Sunday evening. But here's what struck me the most: with the large amount of time it took to drive home and back, there was little time left over to spend with his girlfriend. He would usually only see her for 15 or 20 minutes before having to hit the road again back to base. But he cared so much about this young lady that he was willing to sacrifice all of his free time from the Army just to see her for a few minutes. He made that drive (if I remember correctly) every weekend for 1 or 2 years.
Do you know anyone who loves you like that?
I wanted to relate to you that story because I believe that there is someone who does love you just like that. In fact, even more than that. That love of course comes from God in the bible. Here are three things to remember about God's love for you. May it be encouraging for your heart today.
He sacrificed himself because he loved us: This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 John 4 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5
He knew you before you were born, and has every day for you planned out:
God For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139 He has wonderful plans for your future For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29
