Spaceship Earth no more...? Posted 11-19-2002 09:59

Okay.. so I don't post much anymore. I know, shame on me..

But, I need some info or perspective from the old timers.. Eddie, you still out there?

Would they really closed Spaceship Earth in 2005? Replace it wth some ride from Microsoft called Time Racers?

Would they dare..?

I just don't know what to think, I'm sad Sad I always thought I was a touch overly sentimental for this type of job.. but if they did I would have to say it'd be the nail in the coffin for my design career. I'm upset enough over someone elses work getting torn down, how would I handle my own being bulldozed?

*sigh*

Anyone? Thoughts?

Out with the old... ?? Posted 11-19-2002 16:52

Yeah,

I heard about Spaceship Earth this morning,
but from what they said, the structure is
there to stay (since it is the trademark of
Epcot). The rumor is that it will be gutted
and a new ride put in...something like
a movie sim ride on a track.

I'm always sentimental about the loss of a ride...
but if a ride gets to antiquated, I'm
sure that the cost of upkeep gets expensive,
and will it "connect" with and be loved
by the next generation as much as it was
by us?

I'd rather have a branded attraction
take over than a movie/character promo
ride (which have limited popularity and
short lifespans). I'm sure it's always
hard to get rid of the old...but I think
it allows us the space (physically and
psychologically) to dream new dreams...

spaceship earth Posted 11-20-2002 06:33

I think first off, don't take anything you hear on the news as gospel. After all, it looked to me like someone smuggled out a preliminary schedule from WDI. Those concepts can and DO change daily based on a great number of factors. Even after ground is broken the project is still changing. That's the nature of it.

So hopefully, they won't screw up the best attraction at EPCOT (sorry Loric!). If anything, attraction enhancements are a good thing. There are so many other places that need work before spaceship earth, that I would be very hesitant to do anything other than give it a facelift if I were Mr. Eisner.

That's my two cents -

rumors Posted 11-21-2002 21:01

I don't know anything specific about what would go
into or even if they were getting rid of SE. There has
been talk of enhancing EPCOT. Remember, WDI
exists to consider and discuss practically anything
and every scenario. I believe nothing till I see
construction cranes and rehab fences. Read the
latest WIRED mag on the stands now for a good
article on WDI and what it's challenges are.

I wouldn't get too worried. They have to open Space
first!
