This is my first post here after lurking a little.

I came up with this idea about 5 years back and wrote it all down. I hadn't given it much thought since, but finding a forum of open, like-minded individuals such as yourselves made me dust it off.

The short version is this:

A brief boat-based water ride which splits into 3 distinct dining rooms with entertainment.

The long, linear description:

A guest arrives and takes a moment to look over the menu of available meals while waiting in line to board. Upon reaching the front of the queue, they place their order, and climb aboard a boat (ala Pirates of the Carribean).

The boat moves slowly and comfortably through a short themed area reflecting a pirate theme, an Atlantis theme, and a Island-Tiki theme. The climax of the ride comes in a large space on the water featuring a Pirate ship, the sandy beach of an island, and a mysterious Whirl-pool sinking into the ocean. At this point the boat with either randomly move towards one of the three spots, or the dining location will have been chosen by the guest prior to boarding.

Entering the pirate ship will lead up a plank to into a large galley featuring a stage.

Heading towards the Island, a guest's boat will float past palm trees into a hidden Oasis also featuring a stage.

Heading downward toward the sinkhole, the boat will be lowered on an elevator, and move through a tunnel into a beautiful Atlantis palace (or Mermaids...), also featuring a stage.

Regardless of which dining room the guests are taken to, they will stop at an offloading point, an attendant will confirm they are who they are supposed to be, and they will be escorted to a table. Their food has been cooked while they were on the ride and will be ready to eat when they arrive. (or shortly thereafter).

Shows on the stage will perform regularly at set times (focusing primarily around meal times).

What do ya think? All comments, thoughts, criticisms, helpful hints, etc, are welcome.

So I really like the idea of allowing a guest to choose a restaurant experience, but I'm not sure that a ride is needed for this. And, on the same token, I had a hard time connecting to this idea. If a show (no matter it's format) is about allowing your guests to escape to an environment and connect to the world they're in than I would ask you this, does this idea seem conflicting? If you were to walk into an environment and find three distinctly different themes wouldn't you feel lost?

Now, take the example of the BLUE BAYOU at Disneyland. Here's a restaurant that allows diners to bask in the joy of the Pirates ride, watching guests float by en route to Jolly Roger's fair warning. All the while, they sit under the charm of fireflies, moonlight and the splash of water against weathered wood. Where else can you get an experience like that?? Why can't we have more restaurants like that inside the parks instead of McDonald's posing as a pierside burger stop (Burger Invasion at DCA).

Anyway...just some food for thought Wink

Three themes in the same space *could* be a bit complex, however, there are many places that create "portals" so that the guest can choose which way to go (think of the Disneyland hub in miniature). The difficulty would be in making the ride long enough that their food would be ready, since most rides have enough budget for 5-7 minutes -- although there *are* some exceptions... You may also have people upset to see a ride that they can only go on if they are eating...

On the other hand, the idea is just right... You are building anticipation for the experience of eating at these themed locations, and the themes are very intriguing... I would wonder if there are alternative ways to build that sense of anticipation and that the experience is something special... (rather than having people just walk into the restaurant and sit)...

For example, maybe the Pirate Restaurant is on a real "deserted island"... so you have to take a boat out on a natural lake in order to reach it, and perhaps dock in a cave (each seating is at a specific time)... Because your themes involve the lushness of nature, there are a lot of things you could do to extend the theme beyond the restaurant, but not have to make it enclosed as a dark ride...

Part of building anticipation, I think, is giving the person time to think about what they are about to see, and giving them little glimpses that fire their imagination about what they are going to experience. There are probably many ways to make the heart of the idea work that could be really exciting and not terribly complex...

You may want to pull some images off the internet of themed restaurants, including the Blue Bayou, and see what inspires you (as well as what you see that "works" and what doesn't work). Reference material is an important part of the process...

P.S. I would love to hear more about these themed restaurants Very Happy
