I am a sophomore in high school and my ultimate dream is to be an imagineer for the Walt Disney World resort. I am interested in being the guy that comes up with the ideas and tries to put them all together, like X. Atencio. I was just wondering if anyone knew how I could contact an imagineer and ask some questions and if anyone could give me advice to help me achieve my dream. Thanks in advance.

What would you say is the best way to get into the themed attraction industry?

Hi, I don't know the answer to your question. I don't know of any imagineers that give personal interviews but you could always do some research and ask some questions to see if someone might give you half an hour... It might also be useful to call other design studios in the industry. There are plenty of people who hop between Disney and other companies around town, and some of them might be willing to tell you more about the industry. Research the term "informational interview" on Google. It is a technique for finding out more about an industry or job field.

X Atencio apparently started as an animator, and also did music and scripts: http://legends.disney.go.com/legends/detail?key=x+atencio
I don't know anyone in the industry who simply thinks of ideas, but there are designers, project managers, art directors, show directors, etc. Everyone has a specialty that they fill their day with. In my experience and from what I have heard, ideas often come from both brainstorms, which involve people from different disciplines, and from people working in their specialty (whether they are a musician, writer, designer, engineer, business manager, etc.). Ask youself what real world job you think you would enjoy doing. These jobs usually exist in imagineering as well... and imagineering jobs are not always long-term, so you also want something you can "fall back" to that you wouldn't mind doing for a day job... Designing rides can be fun, but it takes a lot of people using all sorts of talents in order to make it work... Everyone has great ideas, and then it takes a team in order to make it work! If you like the "putting it all together" aspect, you might like Art Direction or Project Management, but I would recommend researching these as job fields before deciding how you want to move forward...

To get an informal interview with a random Imagineer (but it's not free or anywhere near inexpensive), try the "Dining With an Imagineer" at WDW. They offer them quite a bit at the Brown Derby and started a few at The Flying Fish.
