Yeah... those were spam... they're gone now... Basically, watch the subject lines... If it looks off topic, it's probably spam... Make sure to use subject lines that are descriptive and that way we all know what's what, and the moderators will take down the spam ASAP. Smile

Holly - you can probably delete or edit posts now. Let me know if you cannot. Holly - a spammer's worst nightmare! Now, back to theme park design!

Yeah... My powers are fully in force now... I *wish* I were a spammer's worst nightmare! If they got what they truly deserved, their computers would be taken down with some foul virus the minute they tried to post that crap (or at least their IP would be permanantly banned from the board)! Until that time however... I am enjoying the "delete" button...

It looks like the next round of spam is coming through. What's terrible is that they don't even know exactly wha they're doing. Automated harvesters. I'll bet that guests will not be allowed to post anything before long.

Color me annoyed! Thanks for letting me know about the spam, Martin... They're getting smarter and actually responding to posts, rather than just starting topics (though sometimes they started topics and then replied to their own posts)... I had to go through a lot of posts and clean out all of their replies. I think we are clean at the moment... I don't know if there is a way from Nate's end to stem the tide of spam... I am guessing it is not an option in this software package.

As soon as Nate turns on the restriction and disallows guests from posting, they'll just start creating accounts. Spam, in almost all of its forms (mmm, Hormel Spam), is bad. There are issues in every online system. I have over 700 spam emails in my mailbox, by the way. I never knew I needed that much v1@gr0.

Well, if they create accounts... we'll just ban them. I've already banned a couple. I think they'll quickly realize that it's not worth their effort to spam this board because it will be deleted quickly after it's posted.

Unfortunately, they're probably running some script to do the spamming. They'll just change their tactics slightly and start creating accounts faster than they can humanly be banned. It's a shame, really.

Hey, this doesn't really have to do with spam, but . . . I posted, then realised I'd misspelled a word. So when went to edit it, it said I couldn't post because I had just posted! What do I do?

Go back to the thread and post another reply. Or, just pretend that you didn't see the mistaek :) . I don't see an edit button or link for individual posts.

Don't worry about it. Occasional spelling and grammar errors are normal. You should see some of the messages I read at work. I swear some people never learned the difference between there, they're, and their. "Hey, it passed spell check."

There's a time limit between posts to keep spammers from spamming the whole board too quickly. Just wait a couple minutes and try again.

Aren't you a smart cookie! That will probably help a lot, because usually when it rains, it pours...

Apparently the spammers aren't real people but spam bots. I'm working on a way to keep them from being able to register automatically and spam. That way we can be back to something more fun.... Imagineering!

Is it possible to make it that you can't become a member without approval so that Nate or Holly have to approve your membership before being able to post? I think that is how some other sites are. You can't do anything on the site until you become a approved member. Might be a pain but probably less trouble than being a spam hunter. I am willing to help out with the spam killing. I am usually on at least once or twice a day most days (don't tell the boss).

The problem is that you have no idea when someone is registering whether or not they will cause trouble for you... But I would bet we may be able to create one of those "read the random scrambled image" things... computer programs are still not very handy at visual recognition of letters, numbers and objects within images, so bots would not be able to register.

The spam is getting slower and it is almost all links... I am trying to hop on every day or two and clean house, so we should be rolling along pretty well at this point.

I'm currently working on applying a patch that will pretty much filter out all of the spam bots. They're pretty much just a nuissance more than anything. So just be patient people and we'll get it taken care of.

It's getting a lot worse. I just posted something and as soon as it came up, it said there were three views already. The bottom of the main index said there weren't even that many on-line at the time. Bad stuff going on.

BTW, when my son tried to join, he never got the e-mail to respond, to open his account. We'll just try again with another user name, soon.
