For Round Three of the Theme Park Apprentice competition, we had to come up with an idea for a new parade for Main Street. This is what I came up with:

Look To Tomorrow – Parade

Over the years, people have had many different versions of what they thought the future might look like. This parade will show a sampling of some of those ideas, from the perspective of Disney and also from the rest of the world. The floats are in sets of two, representing each of these, from unique time periods that stand out most. Each will include a collage effect of animatronics, models (of architecture and transportation)…

Seeming to pop out of Main Street, Float #1 – Disney at the Turn of the Century, highlights the new gas-powered car, electric street lights, and the AA family from the Carousel of Progress (in the first scene). They are accompanied by their theme song, “There’s a Great Big, Beautiful Tomorrow”.

Float #2 – The World’s Future at the Turn of the Century, is in the style of Jules Verne and the vehicles inspired by him. Included are the Nautilus, the balloon from Discovery Bay concept designs, and a train.

The second era covers the 40’s through the 60’s. Float #3 – Disney at Mid-Century, uses samplings from the ’64 World’s Fair and an early concept model for EPCOT as envisioned by Walt himself. An AA of The Rocketeer is the centerpiece. The music for this set of floats is from the Magic Skyway attraction at the Fair.

Float #4 – The World at Mid-Century, showcases the sci-fi world of the infamous 3-D movies style of the era, as well as the actual moon landing. A Flash Gordon AA also rides along.

Moving ahead to the heavily synthesized sounds of the 1980’s, Float #5 – Disney in the 80’s, features the newly returning Captain EO as an AA, with costumed characters from the attraction (with their instruments, playing “We Are Here To Change The World”). Surrounding the float are dancers from the film.

Float #6 - The World in the 80’s, highlights Star Wars and its characters. Along side the fictional space ships, the Space Shuttle program is at the forefront. Roller skaters in full disco garb sway and dance along in the street.

The nearer future comes at the end, on Float #7 – Disney in the Near Future. This one mainly focuses on what is ahead for the renovation of Tomorrowland in each of Disney’s Magic Kingdom Parks across the globe. New attractions modeled will be Tron 2 Lightcycles, Incredible Pods, and vehicles from Meet The Robinsons.

Float #8 – The World in the Near Future, is sponsored by Virgin Galactic, with their newest space travelling VSS Enterprise, on its way to the International Space Station. These last two floats fills the air with the theme song for the parade, “The Future is Up to You (What Will You Do?)”. On the back of the float is a large LED screen with rotating images of designs for the future (architecture, transportation, home living…) that have been submitted by guests earlier in the day at a kiosk in Tomorrowland, to be approved by the entertainment department, and selected for that day’s parade. (The kiosk also has an LED display of the daily selected designs, as well as other “honorable mentions”.

As guests watch the parade and screen go on its way, the “Good Night Kiss” to the parade involves high speed fans that give the feel of a bone-chilling wind coming up the parade route and passing them by, along with the sound of a “Whoosh” speeding past, and a whispered, “The Future is Up to You”.

Any thought?
