AR these troubled days Posted 4-18-2003 09:23
Is Augmented Reality near implementation anywhere? Has the current economic situation stalled or accelerated this process?
What kinds of 'fake AR' implementations are up and running?
(I have had a look over past topics and not found anything concerning my question - admittedly, I stopped looking at around mid-2001)

I think that the newest buzzword for this field of
research is "mixed reality".
Although the newest systems are probably a long
way from recognizing things in your field of vision
(ex. buildings, signs, people), streaming information
about a general location is very possible
(ex. Earth Echoes -- dart.ist.ucf.edu/dart/EEC/)
and minituraization of HMD's and GPS devices
is currently underway.
Here in Orlando, some of our buses are hooked
up with GPS and TV-screens, so that the screen
will show you what street intersection you
are approaching, stream the current news
stories and random entertainment pieces as
Cost of hardware (and battery life) is probably
the most prohibitive factor to implementation
of rudimentary personal AR systems. Also, people
may not want to use a HMD when they can pull
out a PDA and get any info that they need.
Useful AR probably won't develop until we
solve some computer vision problems...

To learn more about the transit-based media system Holly described, check out the Web site of Transit Television Network:
I believe the site includes some photos of what the system looks like in action on the streets of Orlando and also contains some tech specs.

I would agree, we are a long way away from
the scientists dream:
High-end mixed media content covering all
areas of interest in lightweight mobile
devices presented through full colour
High-end mixed media content covering one
specific area of interest in heavy-weight
stationary devices presented through
That seems commercially viable and is my
field of interest. In particular in cultural
heritage applications. Especially interesting
