This was absolutely the craziest thing I’ve seen in interactive entertainment inside the Disney parks.
So to all of you software engineering folks out there, I BEG the question: How is this accomplished?
I can’t help but think there’s a guy sitting behind the audience ad-libbing a perfect “Crush” impression. But as I understand, (and please forgive my layman terms), this is all some sort of high-tech audio recognition and AI…thing? I’m so confused and so impressed all at the same time. Ahh, I feel like my minds going to explode, I hope someone can lend some insight.
There is indeed a live actor back stage doing improv to answer all the questions the guests can ask…Someone else controls the animated character, which has a list of maneuvers and commands…like he can swim across the screen, flip, point, and do various facial expressions. I imagine the computing power is very great to pull this off in real time. And of course they can see the audience with a camera…That is basically how that works. There was a company at IAAPA last year selling a knock-off version of this.
They might control Crush a little differently, but the Monsters Inc characters are controlled with video game controllers for things like walking around and such.
Ahhh….well that makes sense. Albeit, not the giant leap in AI technology I was hoping for, but nevertheless, the actor was incredibly funny.
Cool, well thanks for answering my question.
