Middle-o-Woods
Middle-o-Woods is a tavern-style restaurant designed for a Pacific Northwest theme park.
Academic level: Graduate
Premise
Middle-o-Woods was created for a personal project; I collaborated with Isabella Christy for the backstory of this location, and how it fit into the larger park around it. All design work (except for the above piece of concept art, which was partially generated by AI as shown below) is my own.
Exterior Design
The cover art for this project was a combination of AI-generated art and parts that I painted in Procreate. This was my first time incorporating AI-generated art into my concept design, and I found it useful to quickly generate potential ideas that I could then expand upon.
After creating the initial concept art, I made a basic SketchUp model (with organic elements drawn in) to create a concept board detailing the building’s shape, color scheme, and suggested material choices.
I created a 1/4″ scale physical color model of the exterior of Middle-o-Woods, based on the concept board and SketchUp model. All elevations were hand-drawn to scale, mounted on illustration board, and sculpted and painted by hand.
Interior Design
While Middle-o-Woods is surrounded by giant, glowing mushrooms that instill a bit of fantasy, its architecture is still rooted in old historical buildings of the Pacific Northwest. Its interior refers to the Craftsman movement, which was a popular style in the turn-of-the-century Pacific Northwest.
The interior of Middle-o-Woods is cozy, yet intriguing enough to spark curiosity and investigation into the various artifacts and object left scattered around. Many details refer to other attractions and characters found throughout the Pacific Northwest park.
