Juan Bonillo – Sophomore
This semester-long project is part of the Entertainment Design curriculum at Ringling College. In this project, students designed different aspects of an activity at a themed resort, including storyboarding, prop design, documentation, 3D modeling, and physical modeling. Viking Voyage is an activity at a conceptual resort in Oslo, Norway. This resort takes a contemporary approach to Viking culture.
The Resort
Welcome to Noatun Resort and prepare to experience Oslo like a true Viking. Located in the Bygdøy peninsula, the resort is surrounded by the waters the fierce warriors once sailed. Combining the comfort of today with the epic of tradition, the Noatun Resort offers a unique experience that will transport you to Viking times.
Dare to discover Oslo’s legendary Viking history in a place like no other at Noatun Resort!!
Viking Voyage
Nóatún Resort invites you to embark on Viking Voyage, an extraordinary opportunity to traverse Oslo’s waters aboard an authentic Viking warship, just as the fearless Norsemen did centuries ago. Step aboard the fastest ships of ancient history on a journey across Oslo’s historic and modern waterfronts. Dare to join an epic maritime adventure with Viking Voyage!!
Storyboards
The following storyboards show how guests interact with the experience from the moment they find the kiosk to their epic journey on the Oslofjord waters.
The Viking Voyage Kiosk
As seen in the conceptual storyboards, the guest is first introduced to the experience at the Viking Voyage Kiosk. This is the perfect way to start your true Viking adventure. Being a visual landmark of the Nóatún Resort, the kiosk can be seen from any point of the resort. Once you get there, you will find all the information you need about the experience. Your guide for the adventure will also receive you at the kiosk, where they will delight you with the tea Vikings drank before their adventures. When you come back from your journey, stop by to discover the incredible offer of souvenirs.
Viking Voyage is Sponsored by Equinor, a Norwegian Power company.
Prop Design & Documentation
This design intent package provides an in-depth understanding of the designer’s concept for the Viking Voyage Figurehead. Viking Voyage is an extraordinary opportunity to traverse Oslo’s historic and modern waterfronts aboard an authentic Viking warship. The figurehead will first be displayed on the second shelf of the Viking Voyage cart, next to 3 other designs. The guests will choose which figurehead design will be attached to the ship they will sail on.
This dragon is designed to work for both day and night journeys. The last ones will activate the special effects (SFX) features of glowing red eyes and faux smoke. The designs shown in this design intent package provide some guidelines and directions to the design teams and vendors fabricating the figurehead. It is crucial that these guidelines are followed closely and that all interpretation of them is done based on the references and notes provided.
These are some of the most relevant pages of the Design Intent document.
Physical Models
The following white model helps us truly understand the spatial design and scale of the kiosk.
The detailed scale model of the figurehead helps the designer understand the finish and texture of the final prop.
Viking Voyage
This project’s broad scope encompassed many steps of the creative process, teaching me a wide skillset that I’ve used in my internship and academic projects. It also helped me consider theming the smallest details according to a larger theme and concept. Overall, Viking Voyage is a comprehensive project meant to take the guests on an epic Viking journey.
